Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) one is of the oldest healing systems known to mankind. Developed and refined over the last 4,000 years, TCM employs the elements of nature to explain how all bodily functions interrelate. Vital energy or “Qi” (pronounced “chee”) flows continuously through the body along channels. Disease and pain are seen as blockages in this flow of vital energy and can be corrected using one or more of the following therapies: acupuncture, moxabustion, cupping and laser. Often times Chinese herbal therapy or European biological medicines are used to enhance the healing effects of these treatments.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-fine needles into the body at specific points known to restore the flow of Qi. After the needles are placed at the points, the patient will lay still for 20 to 30 minutes. Acupuncture is an effective treatment for a wide variety of common health problems. Moxabustion

Moxabustion or moxa is the therapeutic application of heat at certain acupuncture points to stimulate the flow of Qi & Blood and warm the channels of the body. Moxa cones and sticks are made of the herb Artemisia Vulgaris which burns with intense heat. Moxa sticks are used to stimulate and heal digestion, increase blood flow to the female reproductive organs, regulate menstruation, and ease painful joints. Tiny moxa cones are applied directly to the baby toe to help turn a breech baby. It is sometimes recommended that patients apply moxa to specific points on a daily basis to prevent disease and maintain health.

Cupping

Cupping is the therapeutic application of small glass cups that create a vacuum seal over specific areas of the body, mainly the back. It is used to promote the free flow of Qi & Blood in the channels which helps relieve pain in the low back, shoulders, legs and abdomen. It is often used in patients who have asthma, allergies and/or cough. Generally, the cup is stays in place for 10 minutes. The skin will become congested with blood causing a temporary violet color. Upon withdrawal of the cup, blood flow and skin color return to normal. Occasionally, the cups leave mild bruises which are painless.

Laser

Laser acupuncture replaces the needle with a light beam. A laser ray is an intense, extremely narrow beam of light that can be directed on an acupuncture point with precision. Acupuncture laser technique uses low intensity and cold light laser ray so there is no damage to tissues. It is an extremely safe and effective way to stimulate acupuncture points in children and adults that are fearful of needles. It has a very calming effect which is readily apparent in children.
